Newsletter 29.05.15

Dear Parents,

The F2 children have been very busy this week doing different activities! Aside from the different activities that we have in the classroom, the children also did some cooking and focus activities with Ms. Grace, Ms. Clarissa and Ms. Claudine.

This week, the children helped Ms Clarissa to make some pancakes. Below are some photos from our cooking activity:

For our Arts and Crafts, the children did a hairstyle craft activity wherein the children chose what kind of hairstyle they liked. Instead of sticking the child's name, the children tried their best to write their names on the card. The artwork that the children created are already on display on our window. Here are some more photos from our art activity:

We also had focus activities this week. This week, the children played more listening games with Ms. Clarissa for phonics readiness. Ms Grace did a positional language activity with the children to reinforce their knowledge about this topic. The children learnt different vocabulary such as "on", "on top of", "in", "under", "behind" and "beside". The children also did some parachute games with Ms. Claudine. The children played "Shoot the Ball" wherein the children had to work together to shoot the ball into the parachute's hole in the middle. It was very lovely to see the children work together as they moved the ball towards the hole.  Another game that the children played was "Parachute Tag". In this game, the children had to go under the parachute and look for an open space before the parachute goes down and "tags" them.

The children are doing very well in sharing their favourite book with the class. The children did a good job retelling the story and sharing something about the books that they brought. They also  did a good job asking and answering questions about the book that was shared in class.

REMINDERS:
*The children will start going to the big swimming pool in preparation for F3. May we request you to please let your child bring a big towel  for our swimming session on Tuesday.

*Please remember to bring your child's hat to school.

Thank you so much and we wish you a good weekend!

Kind Regards,
Ms. Claudine, Ms. Grace, Ms. Clarissa and the F2 Teachers

Newsletter 22.05.2015

Dear Parents,

Thank you all for the books and cakes donated for our fund-raising project. The children have had a wonderful time 'buying' books last Thursday and have been saying that they have helped people in Nepal rebuild their lives after the earthquake. Again our deepest gratitude.

We have also been doing lots of listening games and activities as part of learning "Letters and Sounds'. Please have a look at this online Listening Game and try it with your child at home.

Have a look at what we have been doing in school this week.

* Children have had a great time playing with parachute this week. They have been following the instructions very well and have learnt vocabulary such as - fast, slow, up, down.

* Ms Clarissa helped them make some 'Golden Lime Muffin'. They mixed and stirred ingredients and happily put the mixture in the oven.

* They have been accessing the Music Corner a lot and have been using available musical instruments to create different sounds in the classroom.

Have a relaxing weekend!

Thank you.

Ms Grace and F2 teachers

Updated Health-Related Policies

Dear Parents,

In light of the recent cases of Conjunctivitis/Pinkeye, please be informed of the following updates on the school policies:

1.  If there is no previous case of Conjunctivitis in the classroom or at home, children who show symptoms of Conjunctivitis in school such as eye redness, swelling, and discharge will be first given eye drops by the school nurse and will be allowed to join in typical school activities whilst being monitored by the teachers.  If the symptoms still persist, they will then be sent home.

2.  If there already is an existing Conjunctivitis case in the classroom or at home, children who show symptoms of Conjunctivitis will be immediately sent home as this is a sign that the Conjunctivitis is contagious and may affect other children.  Sending them home is important to prevent further spread of the virus.

3.  Please be informed that if your child is experiencing redness, swelling, or discharge in the eyes, they should stay at home to fully recover.

We would also like to remind everyone of the school policy that children must not be sent to school if they had fever within the past 24 hours prior to going to school.  Children must stay at home instead to recover and prevent the spread of any virus.  If your child comes to school with slight fever, please inform any of the teachers so they can be properly monitored and looked after.

Thank you so much and have a good week ahead!

Newsletter 15th of May, 2015

Our F2 Hair Salon and Spa has been very busy this week!  It is a delight to see children learning new vocabulary such as 'massage', 'hair wash', 'haircut', and also 'nail polish'.  The children have been taking turns in giving each other salon and spa services.  The most popular one is hair washing and hairstyling.  It is impressive to see how good the children are in using the hairbrushes, combs, and other grooming tools.

We focused on 2 concepts in Maths this week--counting up to 20 and the use of positional language.  The children practised their counting skills through Lego painting.  The children also partook in a focus activity about positional language and learnt the words 'under', 'behind', 'in', 'on', 'beside', 'above', and 'on top'.  We have been encouraging proper usage of these words with the children and we hope you can reinforce the use of these words as well at home!

We have also begun doing activities for Letters & Sounds by doing a Listening Walk.  Children put on their 'listening ears' and went around the school to listen to different sounds in their surroundings.  The children identified different sounds such as bouncing balls, cars and motorbikes, engines, chirping birds, and voices of teachers and children talking.

For Arts & Design, the children recreated their faces by putting plasticine on a blank face template.  They first looked at themselves in the mirror and identified the parts of their face--the eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth.  The children came up with lovely self-portraits that are now displayed on one of our boards.  You are welcome to have a look when you come in the classroom!

Thank you to all the parents who have sent their children with their favourite books this week.  The children are doing such an amazing job in talking about their books and also in answering the questions asked by their friends and teachers.

Our name writing practise is still ongoing.  Some children have already begun writing their names properly whilst some are still practising their letter formation and pen grip.  We have been teaching children to write their names properly by writing the first letter of their names in capital/big letters and in small letters for the rest.  If your child has 2 names, for example 'Minh Anh', it would also be helpful to encourage them to practise writing both of their names instead of just the initials.

It has been a busy week for everyone!  Have a lovely weekend!

Kind Regards,

Ms Clarissa, Ms Grace, and the F2 Team

Newsletter 08.05.2015

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school! I trust you all have had a relaxing holiday.

As we start the new term, let us all welcome a new member of F2, Tam. He started attending part-time last Monday and is beginning to get used to our routine in the classroom.

New term, new role play area! Children have been really busy supervising our newly opened 'business venture' - the F2 Salon and Spa. We have a complete and relaxing services available for all your needs. Children are all well trained in hair dressing and styling, nail care and even doing different kinds of massage. We have also been learning about different vocabulary related to our role play area.

In Maths, we have been doing loads of counting and representing these numbers in different ways. Some children have also been showing interest and awareness of simple number problems.

Ms Clarissa have been supporting them in their mark making skill of copying and/or writing their names. We are very pleased that majority of the children are able to recognise their names and are beginning to show good awareness of correct letter formation as they write their names. We are doing this activity to prepare F2 for when they move to F3 next year.

Next week, we are going to start introducing Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds. This is a fun way of introducing basic Phonics to children this age.
"Phase One of Letters and Sounds concentrates on developing children's speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for the phonic work which starts in Phase 2. The emphasis during Phase 1 is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills."

We have also been reading the story 'We're going on a bear hunt' and have been learning about positional language such as 'under', 'on', 'in' 'on top' etc. Please see the link to watch a video of the story being told by the author himself, Michael Rosen.

We're going on a bear hunt

As you can see, we have been really busy considering that this is just the first week back. Although our hands are full, we are all having fun at the same time!

Thank you very much and have a lovely weekend!

Regards,
Ms Grace and F2 Team

REMINDERS:

* Please remember to always bring your children's water bottles and hats to school. We have been noticing that a few children have been forgetting these items at home.
